POT AND THE POTTER

Bible in a year – Jeremiah 18, Jeremiah 19, Jeremiah 20; 1 Thessalonians 1, 1 Thessalonians 2:1-16; Psalm 119:1-8

“House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter? says Yahweh. “Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.”
Jeremiah 18:6 WEB

God made the Israelites His people; God loved them, taught them, blessed them, benefited them, and delivered them in so many ways. God’s only hope was for His children to obey Him. But, what God usually got in return were complaints, disobedience, blame, and self-indulgence. I also like to complain and sin against God even in small matters. I was born with uneven feet. When I walk, my steps are asymmetric. When I was young, I could not run like others because I got tripped easily. I often fell and got hurt, so my mother showed me two kinds of leaves to rub against the wounds I got from falling. I complained to my mother, “Why was I born like that? Why didn’t you give birth to me like others?” When I was a teenager, I saw beautiful shoes sold in the market. I really found them desirable. But, it was a problem for me to buy shoes. One day, my uncle visited me and bought three right pairs of shoes. He only had one leg and could only wear the left pair of the shoes. Because my right foot was larger, his right shoe was a perfect fit for me. I thought to myself, “Why do I complain about having uneven feet? I have two feet to wear shoes, while others only have one foot?” Sometimes, we act immature. No matter how old we are, how educated we are, how things are working out for us, how much we pray, or how much we read the Bible, we often allow little things to influence us to lose sight of how blessed we are. We are pots made by the Potter. Our Creator has a plan for His creation. He thought of us and made plans for us before we were born. Therefore, we need to know we are not our own, but we belong to the Potter, who created us, rules us, and watches over us night and day. Let us count our blessings and stand firm for our Potter to use us as He wishes.

Reflection

Are we the pot or the Potter? If we are the pot created by the Potter, should we just live as we wish?

Prayer

Father, help us to be of full use to You. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
