ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER

Bible in a year – Jeremiah 21, Jeremiah 22, Jeremiah 23:1-8; 1 Thessalonians 2:17-19,  Thessalonian 3; Psalm 119:9-16

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you  because of your faith.”
1 Thessalonian 3:7 NIV

When Timothy returned to Corinth after a 200- mile trip from Thessalonica, he went to where Paul and his coworkers were living and he shared some wonderful news. He told them that the church in Thessalonica was doing well spiritually. In fact, he told Paul that believers there were growing in faith! Upon hearing this Paul realized his prayer for the church had been answered. This very good news was encouragement and comfort to Paul as he heard about their desire to see him again and as he recognized their faith and love towards him. He knew that as he brought the gospel to them, they would most likely face persecution themselves. But in spite of this, Paul could see that their faith had grown. It was a blessing and encouragement to him as he was struggling in his own ministry facing persecution and beatings in prison. In my service with the International Ministry as an area director in Southeast Asia, I am blessed to have the opportunity to visit Believers and see God working in their midst. Oftentimes, this also includes seeing the hardship in which they live and work. In my journeys I have visited a resettled Karen village in Myanmar which had been forced to leave their homes and village, as the army demanded they leave everything behind and rebuild elsewhere. I have been to Malaysia and visited the refugee communities in and out of Kuala Lumpur. Those who reside there often live in fear of deportation, violence and prison. In many of the places I visit, I am invited to sit down, share a meal, and drink some tea or coffee as I hear stories about what God is doing in the lives and ministries of my host. I am often then asked and have the privilege to share how God is working in my life and work, and to pray. As I am leaving, people thank me for visiting and share with me that my visit has been an encouragement to them. I am always struck with emotions because I myself always depart encouraged when I see how they live out their faith and are an example to others. This mutual encouragement comes as a result of our shared faith as brothers and sisters in Christ and because the Holy Spirit lives in us to make us one.  Just as the church at Thessalonica was encouraged by Paul and Paul encouraged by church, we are encouraged by each other as we relate the things that God is doing, as we show love to each other, and as we live in faith. Hebrews 10:25 says, “… let us consider how we may spur one other towards love and good deeds… let us encourage each other.”
