PRIDE CAN DECEIVE YOU

Bible in a year: Obadiah 1, Hebrew 2, Proverbs 26:13-22

“The Pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks…”
Obadiah 1:3 NIV

Obadiah 1:3 tells us about Prophet Obadiah’s prophecy revealing the Almighty God’s relationship between the descendants of two kingdoms: Jacob (the Israelites) and Esau (the Edomites). God said to Rebecca, the wife of Isaac, that she would bear the twins and give birth to two kingdoms, but the elder son and his descendants would serve the younger son and his descendents. God had separate blessings in store for the Edomites. However, they always rebelled against God and had no mercy towards their fellow Israelites. They looted and raided the Southern Israelites States. They also pretended to be a good ally and yet they raged wars against Israel through the secret-alliances with the enemies. Above all, they were extremely arrogant in the sight of God. Proverbs 6:17, 21:4 mentions that God hates the prideful ones the most. This is because pride creates obstacles in following God’s way. In spite of all the rebellions, God still loved them unconditionally. God wants to abundantly bless those who do not give up on Him, who ask for forgiveness in humility, and who repent to obey God.

When I was a teenager, I was prideful, which deceived me with the illusions of false confidence and disobedience. I neither sought nor accepted good advice from my parents and the elders, but held onto self-righteousness. When God corrected me, I realized that I was like the Israelites wandering in the wilderness for forty years. Later, God helped me understand that He already had a plan for me since before I was born.  Then and there, I chose the path to walk with Him knowing that it was not going to be easy since pride could always come between us anytime to deceive me and lure me against His will. What I learned from Obadiah 1 is that God’s judgement is upon those who are full of pride towards Him and others, and that He can destroy them anytime just like He did the Edomites. Those who are humble and seek God’s favor will remain safe under God’s mercy and grace just like the Israelites, the chosen people of God. God’s sacred covenant of redemption rests upon those, who never gave up on Him and they will never be destroyed.

Reflection

Let us be humble and obedient. Let us turn away from wrongdoings so that we may experience and appreciate the presence of God’s salvation and grace in our daily journey of life!

Prayer

Lord, guide us not to get distracted from Your way and help us to be always humble in Your sight. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
