DAW KYI’S TEA SHOP

Bible in a Year: Joel 1, Joel 2:1-17; Hebrews 3; Psalm 119:137-144

“…Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love…”
Joel 2:13  The Message

Growing up in one of the poorest countries in the world in the 70’s and 80’s sometimes felt like living in a locust plague, as mentioned by Prophet Joel. Just like the locusts ravaged your field and destroyed your crops, the repressive system made it extremely hard to enjoy the fruits of your labor.  Money was hard to make, good food was expensive, and life was full of tough challenges. My parents owned a little tea shop near three seminaries. My mother’s name was Daw Kyi, so people called it “Daw Kyi Tea Shop.” We also offered rice and curry.  My mother’s pork dish was very delicious and famous.

Seminary students, also mostly poor, found our tea shop to be a place to eat, rest, and socialize. I listened in on many conversations as I waited tables. I heard jokes, love chats, breakup cries, complaints, and all sorts of interesting exchanges. Many seminary students came from afar and often ran out of money waiting for support from their parents. My mother allowed them to buy food on credit. She had a book where she kept track of students’ debt. Some of them were never able to pay back their debts. My parents did not get mad or make a big deal, although the debts ate into their meager income.

Looking back, I realize Daw Kyi Tea Shop was a vessel God used to show His abounding grace, compassion, and love. Today, I sometimes run into those students, who are now serving in important leadership positions in different ministries. One question these leaders frequently asked me is, “How do you cook your mother’s pork?” I tried so hard and often to cook pork curry the way my mother did, but it never tasted like hers. Her pork curry was not just a dish, but an offer of love. Pork curry holds a special meaning to me. It reminds me every time to return to God.

Reflection

Are you facing hardship? What could remind you today of God’s abounding compassion, grace, and love? Is it time to return to God?

Prayer

O God of Life, thank you for your heart and please make my heart like yours. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
