YOU ARE THE LETTER OF CHRIST

“You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.”
2 Corinthians 3:2 NIV
Our family is a faithful Christian family and we serve God in whatever way we can. After I graduated from 10th grade, I heard the call of God and I wanted to go to Bible School to serve in ministry. Due to financial difficulties, I had to leave my family in Ler Doh and went to Thailand for my study. When I graduated with a bachelor degree in theology (BTh), I was around 20 years old and I returned home to visit my mother and my siblings. My mom wanted me to have a relationship with a young man. His family practiced animism. I wanted to please my widow mom and therefore I agreed to enter into a relationship with him. I was so immature at that time. In reality, I did not love him. Later, when I thought about marrying someone I do not love, I got very scared of the thought that I would have to live with a person I did not love for the rest of my life. Therefore, I decided to break this relationship and asked for forgiveness from my mom and the young man including his family. In the culture of the Karen people from the hill area, my action brought shame to both sides of the family.
One other thing that made things more complicated and hurtful was that this young man and his family got baptized after I agreed to have a relationship with him. But after I broke my promise, he went astray and some of his family members went back to their old faith, animism. Whenever I think about this incident, it hurts me a lot and I feel like I did not set a good example for them. I should have been a better example that led them to become true believers. I am mostly away from my hometown, but when I went home I just could not face them. Something that I carelessly agreed to brought so much shame and tears to my mother. My neighbors and the man’s relatives gossiped about me. As a Christian, I realized that my life and behavior did not show a good letter for others to read. Paul told the Corinthians that they are Christ’s letter that people read to know Christ.
Reflection
We are read by others every day but do we remember to reveal Christ in the way we live? We are to be a living letter for others to read and know Christ in us.
Prayer
Lord, help us to live according to your will and reveal Christ to people who read us. Let us not be a stumbling block. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
