LETTING ALCOHOL AND DRUGS LEAD US ASTRAY IS FOOLISH

In my family we have a brother. Under normal circumstances, he is loving and respectful towards me. However, when he is intoxicated, he looks at me like I am his worst enemy. He told my parents he would kill me. He would kick me and even point a gun at me. Even my parents who tried to stop him were not safe. When he is under the influence, he becomes a very foolish person and a bully towards his parents and siblings to the point where the family is afraid of him. But, I am not afraid of him. I reason or oppose him when he acts foolishly. Therefore, he does not like me much. He often wants to kill me. Even if a home has everything, if we have a person with addiction, that home is never a happy home.  My next-door neighbor also has a similar problem. The parents abuse alcohol. Their house is dilapidated. They do not have food. The older children have to garbage-pick to fish for recyclable items, sell them, buy food, and share with the young siblings. They have to do the same thing everyday. Homes struggling with alcohol and drug abuse hurt the development of the children and their rights to education. There is also another case where a person high on drugs experienced hallucination and beat his mother to near-death thinking she was a ghost.  These are the challenges we face today. In our homes, we see a person abusing alcohol and drugs morphing into someone totally different and utterly foolish. Proverb 20:1 teaches us, “Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.” Let us refrain from using alcohol and drugs!

How can churches and Christian communities help those struggling with addiction and their families?

Prayer

Dear God, teach us to love those who abuse alcohol and drugs and pray for them to be delivered from the influence of the addiction. In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.
