HOW LONG

“How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire?”
Psalm 89:46 NIV
The Psalmist expressed life experiences he encountered and emotions he felt. When we go through dark times in life, we often look up to God to help us. However, we sometimes feel that God is very distant. We long to receive answers from God, but He is silent. In discouragement, we might even feel that God has abandoned us because of our numerous sins. During that time, life feels like a boat going through the storms in the ocean about to sink. In desperation, we hope for God to quickly come and rescue us.
I remember such a time when I studied in the Philippines for further theological studies in 2013. I faced countless challenges during that time. The study was extremely hard for someone with a weak foundation in the English language. To catch up, I had to work extra hard. There were other challenges, such as relationships with those from other backgrounds and financial burdens. The hardest of all was when I was sick and almost died. Going through such hardship, I lay on the bed and lifted my eyes welled up with tears to the Lord. I said, “How long, O God, How long?” Many times God did not answer immediately. However, God did not hide forever. God is neither quick to anger nor hasty in judging. Because He is abounding in love, God redeemed us with His blood. Let us lift up our eyes to Him in faith and hope.

Have you ever felt like God abandoned you? In faith and hope, have fellowship with God and go with Him through reading His word, praying, and working together in the church.

Dear God, please do not hide yourself from me. Please forgive my iniquities and listen to my prayer. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
