PRAY WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE GOD IS FAR AWAY
Bible in a Year: 2 Kings 10, 2 Kings 11; Acts 24:1-27; Psalm 80:8-19
“Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.”
Psalm 80:19 NIV
There is none who has not gone through hardship. When we are in the midst of difficult times, it can feel like God is far away from us. Once, in my childhood, my family encountered food shortage. Because we did not have enough rice, we got to eat only once a day and that one meal’s portion was too small to fill me up. Sometimes, my mother cooked rice with banana, which changed the color of the rice and made it look like pig feed. One day I went to school and I knew if I went home after the school was over, there would be no food at home. So, I decided not to go home. Instead, I went to a Burmese teacher who came to live in my village. I was afraid to go inside her house. I was so hungry that I cried out aloud under a tree in front of her house. When the teacher heard my cry, she came out and asked why I was crying. I told her that I was hungry. She then asked why I did not go home to eat. I had to tell her there was no rice at home. The teacher felt sorry for me and fed me. Because of these experiences, I felt that God did not love me and He was far away from me. The writer of the Psalm, Asaph, also felt God was far away from him. Asaph prayed to God and said, “Lord God almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.” Now I know God loves me and He is always near me. Because of His love and presence in my life, I am who I am today. God is never distant from us. He is always with us and takes care of us.
Reflection
Have you ever felt that God is distant from you? What do you do when you feel that way?
Prayer
Dear God, teach me to acknowledge your presence when I am in trouble.
In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
