SHEPHERD OF ISRAEL

Bible in a Year: 2 Kings 8:16-29, 2 Kings 9; Acts 23:12-35; Psalm 80:1-7

“Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,…”
Psalm 80:1 WEB

Psalm 80 is the prayer of the people in oppression crying out to God for deliverance from peril. Let us look at two illustrations explaining God’s identity as Shepherd of Israel.

  1. A shepherd is a caregiver. The word, “shepherd,” emphasizes God as a Caregiver always taking care of His sheep. The Israelites knew God was their Shepherd who constantly cared for them.
  2. A shepherd is a protector. The word, “protector,” highlights the responsibility of a shepherd to keep vigil and protect His sheep from the enemy and the danger of wild animals. When the Israelites were in trouble under the dictatorship, they looked up to their Shepherd for protection.

As a Shepherd, God generously offers direction, care, protection, food, and shelter for His sheep. When the Israelites disobeyed God and fell into the hands of the enemies, they remembered God as their Shepherd. They turned their ways and prayed to God, Who answered their prayers, saved them, and delivered them to a place He promised to them. Likewise, Karen people suffered through poverty and wars. They have been displaced because their homes were destroyed by the wicked work of the Burmese army. The Karen had to leave their country and fled into Thailand. They have become refugees for 35 years.  No one knows what will happen to them in the future. Therefore, it is imperative the Karen people turn their ways back to God so the power of the Karen’s Shepherd will grant them their country and lift up their ways.

Reflection

How near are you to your Shepherd? He is always there to care for you and protect you.

Prayer

Dear Father God, thank you for being our Shepherd. Please hear us.
In Jesus’ Name we pray.  Amen
