COMMUNITY SERVANTS
Bible in a Year: 1 Chronicles 7, 1 Chronicles 8; Romans 13:1-14,
Psalm 89:38-45
“For he is a servant of God to you for good.”
Romans 13:4a WEB
Paul encouraged people to obey the governing establishment. He said, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. (Romans 13:1-3, NIV)” Paul saw the positive bright side of the governing authorities and said, “for he is a servant of God to you for good (Romans 13:4a).”
On the other hand, John, in Revelation 13:7, revealed another side of the governing authorities and said, “It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them.” If all governing authorities have the characters of Romans 13, we ought to respect and obey them. But, there are governing authorities that abuse power and devastate the nations. As Christians, we have the responsibility to defy these authorities. In order to serve and safeguard the people, it is also our duty to bring the rulers whose characters parallel what Revelation 13 describes on the side of the authorities whose qualities resemble what Romans 13 illustrates. Authorities must not abuse and oppress the people. Christians must understand their responsibilities and rights.
Reflection
What kind of good governing authorities do you subject yourself?
What kind of bad governing authorities do you not subject yourself?
Prayer
Dear God, please help Your churches so they will be good servants for the communities. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
