CARRY OUT YOUR WORK ENTRUSTED TO YOU
Bible in A Year: Judges 10, Judges 11; John 6:25-59; Psalm 59:1-8
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.”
John 6:38 WEB
One day, a man spent time in the city of Philadelphia looking for a job to make a living. He went into the office of a famous businessman, Mr. Girard. He asked Mr. Girard for a job and he was told there was a job for him. Mr. Girard pointed to a pile of bricks and asked him to bring those to the end of the compound and arrange them in order. He worked on moving the piles of bricks until evening. After finishing, he informed his boss, who was pleased with the man’s work and paid him his wage. The man asked if there would be more work for him the next day. He was assured he would have a job and it would be to move the bricks back to their original place from where he took them. The man thanked Mr. Girard for giving him more work. The next morning, without saying much, the man put back the bricks where he moved them from and he did a thorough job. Mr. Girard asked the man to repeat the same steps the entire week. The man did not complain and question his boss’ sanity. Later, Mr. Girard trusted the man with a leadership position of great responsibility. Why did Mr. Girard give the man such a prominent job? It is because the man can be entrusted to carry out his job well as he was instructed.
Working in meat processing plants or factories that make car parts, or any job, we may feel like we are perpetually doing Mr. Girard’s first week of assignments. As repetitive and perfunctory as our jobs may get, let us “work heartily as for the Lord, and not for men” (Colossians 3:23). God will see that “we can be trusted with much because we can be trusted with very little.” (Luke 16:10a).
Reflection
Jesus came to earth to carry out His Father’s will and not His own. Jesus honored the Father’s trust with perfect obedience. We, children of God, must also carry out the work entrusted to us.
Prayer
God, please teach me to do the work You trust me to do in the way that pleases You. I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
