KEEP YOUR PROMISE TO GOD
Bible in A Year: Judges 2:6-23, Judges 3; John 4:27-42; Psalm 56:1-13
“I have put my trust in God. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? Your vows are on me, God. I will give thank offerings to you”
Psalm 56:11-12 WEB
David had to endure the enemy harming him and going after him in so many ways to destroy him. Psalm 56:11-12, which we read earlier, described how David responded. Sometimes, we pray to God vowing to offer Him something in return or lead a better life or do all sorts of things if He answers our prayer. However, once our needs are met, we forget our vows. God does not approve of those who do not keep their vows. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 says, “When you vow a vow to God, don’t defer to pay it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay that which you vow. It is better that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay.”
When I was in Nu Poe refugee camp, I was a leader in a Bible school. I prayed to God and made a vow that if He made this school successful, I would work in this school until no student was in attendance or I would relocate only after my work was done. God answered my prayer and granted success to the Bible school. However, I did not keep my vow. I relocated to America. Not only that, I even complained I was exhausted because of having to face so many obstacles serving God in America. I decided I would just work to earn money and quit ministry. Once I did that, I also felt worn out and burnt out. I tried working at a fast pace, but I could not finish the amount of work required of me. People scolded me. People complained about me. Then and there, I remembered that no one complained about me when I worked at the Bible school. I also remembered my promises I did not keep. I wept and asked God for forgiveness. I asked God to let me serve Him again. Within a week, I was dismissed from work and at the same time, was called to serve as a shepherd. I thank God for forgiving me and allowing me to do His work.
Reflection
Have you ever made a promise to God? Did you keep your promise? Is there a reason for you to ask for forgiveness? God forgives us and wants to use us in His work.
Prayer
Lord, please bless those serving in ministry as well as all of your children to keep their promises to You. We know your hands are not short for us. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
