FREEDOM IS NOT FREE

Bible in a year – Jeremiah 11:18-23, Jeremiah 12, Jeremiah 13; Colossians 2:6-23; Psalm 118:1-16

“As therefore you received Christ Jesus, the Lord, walk in him, rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, even as you were taught, abounding in it in thanksgiving.”
Colossians 2:6-7 WEB

In His freedom, God created a people group and He said, “It was very good “(Genesis 1:31). Ethnic Karen people are special, as much as others are, in God’s created order. The love for the preservation of one’s ethnic identity with socio-politico– cultural de facto, is never out of the line in God’s creation. More notably during Adoniram  Judson’s time the Karen people’s identity began taking root with the conversion to Christ in the person of Ko Tha Byu and this was nearly two hundred years ago. Since then, many Karen ethnic have committed to following Jesus Christ as their personal savior, debunking the numerous animistic spirits of the fore-parents. The new Identity in Christ entails steadfast rootedness in personal life of devotion to Christ and at the same time, fleshing out that devotion in historical context. In the Old Testament, people abandoning their God were judged. World history is replete with failures when human pride takes precedence. Today, the Karen people must rekindle hope- hope in God. The Karenic diaspora from the Karen Homeland in Burma to Mai La in Northern Thailand and on to nations of the world–could that not be a blessing in disguise for the Karens? In the possibility of much to muster to the Karen narrative, can hope in God ignite the flame of Karen belongingness with greater imagination?

Paul was no fanatic visionary, but emphatic of the great pitfalls of disengagement from Christ. Just as your fore-parents in simple faith accepted Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and later you also have trod the same path of the cross,  Paul heralds in a clear message that Karens “continue to live in him (Christ ), rooted and built up in him, strengthened in faith as you were taught, and following with thankfulness (Colossian 2;6-7).” What you have now should not be taken lightly. Remember the relative freedom you have is not free. True freedom in Christ entails responsibility of remaining rooted in him and to your fellow sisters and brothers though suffering and sacrificial love. Your hope in God must begin now by translating that you have become the hope of God for your people.

Reflection

How do you use the freedom you have to bring the hope of God to your people?

Prayer

Lord, help us to bring Your hope to this world. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
