GOD IS NEAR ME

On October 23, 1992, I was in a terrifying incident that I could never forget my entire life. I was working as a crew member on a passenger ship called “Royal Pacific”. The ship was sailing in the Strait of Malacca. It was at night about 2:30 AM when I heard a clamor and felt the whole ship wobbling and losing balance. Running out of the engine room, some crew members said the ship collided with another ship and the water flooded into the vessel through the ruptures. So, we ran up to the top floor, looked down, and saw many people in chaos. Being a worker on the boat, we were not allowed to get into the lifeboat. The passengers had the priority to board the lifeboats. We all knew that the hull of the ship was completely flooded and the entire ship was about to sink. We dived into the water and tried to escape from the sinking ship. Within a few minutes, there were loud noises all over the place. Shortly after, the entire ship sank into the depth of the ocean. There was total darkness surrounding us. Looking above we saw a big sky and twinkling stars. Underneath our heads was the vast abyssal ocean. We kept swimming and felt extremely exhausted. I cried out to the Lord for strength. In brief, a big Russian ship came to our rescue before dawn. My friends and I were saved, but some people drowned.
All of my Karen friends escaped death. We often fall short in upholding Christian character and values. We are just simple believers. We pray each day in plain words for God to be by our side and keep us each day. God heard us and He was faithful to us. Even though we walked through the valley of the shadow of death, we experienced a new dawn of life.

O’ Lord, we don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but I am glad that you are always by my side. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
