WHOM WOULD WE TRUST AND DEPEND ON IN TIMES OF CRISIS?

Bible in a year – Jeremiah 40:7-16, Jeremiah 41, Jeremiah 42; 1 Timothy 4, Proverbs 25:11-20

“Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot.”
Proverbs 25:19 NLT

When going through a crisis, we tend to rely on our status, education, wealth, and those who know better than we do, which can result in losing confidence in ourselves and forgetting who we are in Christ. Just as Proverbs 25:19 tells us, those who put confidence in unreliable people, especially the evil ones, can bring to themselves trouble and calamity. It is hard, if not impossible, to chew with a broken tooth and walk with a lame foot. The year 2021 is the year we, people from Myanmar, have to face political turmoil. Among the many troubles this brings is the difficulty to make money and also to get your money out of the bank. The distance between my village and an ATM machine in the city is about a 30-to-45-minute walk. I woke up very early in the morning, but by the time I got to the ATM machine, the queue was very long and the waiting token number reached more than 300. After 300 people have already withdrawn money, it will be impossible to withdraw my own money. Many people told me not to waste my time waiting. But in faith I sat and waited patiently. After 120 people withdrew cash, the machine appeared to run out of money and the guard told the people to go home. People left one after another and soon they were all gone. I then took my card out and put it in the machine. I got my cash as the 120 people did. This happened to me four times. A few saw what happened to me and said, “You are so lucky.” Some asked to see my card and complimented me saying “I respect you.” I responded, “It is not good luck. It is the good Lord’s provision for me because He knows I really need it.” Dear brothers and sisters, in times of crisis, (1) trust in the Lord in everything, and (2) have confidence in yourself more than in others. 

Reflection

Do we sometimes evaluate our faith? In trusting God, can we have confidence in ourselves?

Prayer

Dear Father, please give us a heart that is steadfast and the faith that does not waiver in times of crisis. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
