BOLDNESS IN SERVICE

Bible in a Year: Habakkuk 1, Habakkuk 2, Habakkuk 3:1-19; Titus 2; Proverbs 26:3-12, Habakkuk 3:10-19

‘‘Though the cherry trees don’t blossom and the strawberries don’t ripen,
the apples are worm-eaten and the wheat fields stunted,
Though the sheep pens are sheep-less and the cattle barns empty,
I’m singing joyful praise to God. I’m turning cartwheels of joy to my Savior God.
Counting on God’s Rule to prevail, I take heart and gain strength.
I run like a deer. I feel like I’m king of the mountain!’’

Habakkuk 3:17-19  The Message

One December I went on a Mission Campaign with Bible students from Kawthoolei Karen Baptist Bible School and College (KKBBSC). The purpose of the campaign was to visit Karen homes along the Thai-Burma border, celebrating Sweet December (celebrated on the night of November 30 to commemorate the birth of Christ).  The Karen group constantly sang  Christmas songs and preached God’s Word at each house. Every morning, as the students and leaders woke from sleep, and before any food was eaten, everyone prayed fervently. Throughout the day I witnessed joy on the face of each student in the group and laughter on the lips of each person, even if food was not plentiful. However, what little we ate, we enjoyed.  I remember we walked joyfully, smiling and joking while chewing sugar cane!

Travel however, even for mission campaigns, is not safe for students. To go and testify God’s love is risky. Why? The United Nations protects the IDPs in the camp, but not those who travel outside of the camp. Even with appropriate travel papers, students still risk steep fines or jail time when sharing the love of Christ beyond the barbed wire fence of the refugee camp. 

And yet, there we were on a Mission Campaign. Some student groups on the campaign traveled deep  into jungle areas to lead prayer and Vacation Bible School. Not having much to eat, the joy of salvation was provision enough to sustain mission service.

How might mission work evoke joy in you? How might you do mission work, even when much is lacking? How is God able to supply abundance?

O God of Life, remind me today that you are enough. You have enough. I can live in Your abundance even when it appears otherwise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
