CHRISTIAN GLADIATORS
Bible in a Year: Jeremiah 46, Jeremiah 47; 1 Timothy 6:3-21; Psalm 119:73-80
“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
1 Timothy 6:12 NIV
There are many battles that we fight in our lives. Personally, I have been fighting many battles in my life since the day I was born. On the day I was born, I was born breech and no one realized I was going to be born next right after my older twin sister was born, because my mom did not know she was carrying twins. When I started going to school, my battle was to do well in school. When I became an adult, my battle was to get a good career. When I went to my first Navy Officer Candidate School in 2018, my battle was to pass the third swimming class which consisted of a deep-water jump, a 50-yard swim, and a 5-minute prone float. As someone who is afraid of heights and water, this battle was very challenging for me. However, I knew that it was a good fight that I had to win over. Thus, I fought this fight with courage from the good Lord and I won. A friend of mine humorously called me a woman gladiator.
I am wondering how many of us are fighting the good fight of the faith. Paul reminded us in 1 Timothy 6:12 to “fight the good fight of the faith.” I believe that fighting the good fight of the faith should be the goal for all believers. Christian life is a difficult battle which contains many different pitfalls, which Paul describes as a good fight. It is a battle against the world, the flesh, the devil and our own self-will. I have seen many of our Karen people fight through many physical and spiritual battles in their lives. When they fight the battle before them with perseverance and determination, they do all for the glory of God. They battle the good fight of the faith by trusting God in all things. In so doing they are taking hold of eternal life to which they are all called – so that they may have a strong spiritual faith in the presence of many witnesses. I would call my Karen people Christian gladiators. Although it will take dedication, the prize is so much better than a prize that a Roman gladiator receives. This prize is eternal life for the believers.
Reflection
Are you willing to fight the good fight of the faith? Are you willing to be a Christian gladiator who takes hold of eternal life in Christ?
Prayer
Gracious God, help us to fight the good fight of faith until the day we meet you. Also, may we realize that we have won the victory over the world, devil, and the flesh by faith in Jesus Christ. In the name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
