REJOICE IN SUFFERINGS

Bible in a Year: Jeremiah 9:17-26, Jeremiah 10, Jeremiah 11:1-17; Colossians 1:24-29,Colossians 2:1-5; Psalm 117:1-2

“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions. Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.”
Colossians 1:24-29 NASB

I remember the first time I met Pastor Tha Hser. He is the epitome of humility and grace, and his smile is the kind that penetrates the heart with love and joy. You see Jesus in him. He is Apostle Paul in the Karen community, for he is willing to suffer for others. In Paul’s letter to the Colossian Christians, he says, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh, I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions (Colossians 1:24).” Paul was willing to suffer greatly for the message entrusted to him to proclaim (Colossians 1:25-26). He suffered for the sake of others that they might know this message. The Christian message was never one of ease and convenience. Jesus’ followers often suffer much for their faith. Such a willingness to suffer goes against our culture. We want our faith, but not if it costs us something.  

Reflection

Suffering is the badge of true discipleship. Apostle Paul was willing to suffer so others may receive Christ. Are you prepared to face discomfort, rejection, even suffering to do the same? There is a day that awaits believers where all pain and suffering will cease. Until then, we continue to declare God is still good and trust our life in His sovereign hands no matter what comes our way.

Prayer

 Father, please help us find your mercy and goodness when trials and the storms of life come our way. If we are prone to grumble and complain, may the Holy Spirit convict our hearts and remind us to be thankful for your promise of eternity because of the cross. May we look for opportunities to comfort those around us who are suffering as well, so we can help hold each other up. We know that heaven is our home and that the crown of life awaits those who stand firm in the faith, trusting that you have overcome the world and there is no reason to fear. We give you praise and thanksgiving that you will never leave us alone to walk through suffering alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
