GROW IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD’S WILL AND BEAR GOOD FRUIT

“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,  so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,  in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

The year 2020 brought new challenges to everyone on the face of this earth as the pandemic Covid-19 became a reality. Fear of the unknown brought deep anxiety and feelings of frustration and anger to many of us, even to those of us who know and love God and place our trust in Him. We may have asked “why?” or “what is God’s purpose in this?” or “what can I learn from this?” or “how am I and my family going to survive the hardships that we are facing daily?”

Dealing with difficult times is nothing new for the Karen people.  Their stories of persecution, encampment and their struggle to protect their families were shared with the Monte Vista Baptist Church family as the Karen refugees began to be settled in the Phoenix area in 2007.  But along with those heart-rendering stories came the story of a faith deeply rooted in Jesus Christ.  God was not a god to fear, but a God who walked with them, a God who loves them and calls them to share the Gospel message.  Just as Adoniram Judson had gone from America to serve the Lord in Burma in 1812, these grateful Karen Christians felt they had the opportunity and responsibility to be Christ’s ambassadors upon their arrival to the United States.

In reading the apostle Paul’s prayer in Colossians 1:9-14 I am reminded of just how much our Karen brothers and sisters have faithfully followed Christ and how they have blessed my life with their perseverance and desire to serve the Lord and those in their community.  Brothers and Sisters: continue to bear fruit as you grow in the knowledge of God; continue to be strengthened with God’s power to endure and to be patient in times of trial; continue to be joyful, giving thanks to God for his holy presence in your life.  Let your light shine!
