FORSAKE PERSONAL DESIRES FOR GOD’S GLORY

As human beings, we have our own personal desires that we seek to fulfill. Some of these desires are good, but some may not be so good. No matter what, once we really desire something, it is very hard to let go of it, especially if it is the desire that we attach meaning to our life. For instance, if we love someone who is someone’s girlfriend or wife, should we pursue this desire as Christians? While this scenario may be a no-brainer, many people do not hesitate to chase after this want. Some would say we have rights and freedom. The world also teaches us that we have rights and freedom to go after what we want. What we need to consider first and foremost is if this desire is in line with the will of God. If what we want goes against God’s will and makes a brother or sister stumble, it is imperative we forsake that desire.
The Apostle Paul instructed us that we are to refrain from doing things that would cause a brother or sister to stumble (1 Corinthians 8:13). Finally, I want to say that we can glorify God with not only things we do, but also things we don’t do because going after those things is outside of His will.
Reflection
What are the things we do that might be stumbling blocks to our brothers and sisters? Am I willing to forsake my personal interests and desires for the sake of benefiting others and more importantly, for the aim of glorifying God?
Prayer
Dear God, please help me to forsake my own desires and follow Your desires instead. Please help me to have unity with my brothers and sisters. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
