DON’T BE PROUD

“For if you were cut out of that which is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree, how much more will these, which are the natural branches, be grated into their own olive tree?”

After creating all things, God created man and put him in the garden of Eden. There was only one rule: “Don’t eat that fruit.” Due to the sinful pride that wanted to be like God, man disobeyed God and was banished from Eden. Man became alienated and disconnected from God. Today, there are many believers who deliberately disobey God and become disconnected from God. Our Creator does not forsake us. It is His desire that all men will be saved. As a result, God chooses some to dedicate their lives in serving God and bringing people to Christ for salvation. God chooses individuals as well as groups of people. The Israelites were chosen as God’s people. We learn from 1 Chronicles 4:9-24 and 5 that Jabez was chosen by God. Jabez asked God to bless him by enlarging his border and protecting him from harm. God granted his wishes. If we read Psalm 89:19, we will also see God’s purpose and plan for David as His chosen one. God’s hand was with him, strengthened him, and granted him victory over his enemies. God continually blessed David’s descendents.
Today, God also chooses you and me, who are gentiles, just like He chose Paul. One thing we must always keep in check is pride. Pride makes us compare ourselves with others and creates envy in us. Pride leads us to take the glory and praise that belongs to God. Prideful leaders can severely hurt the church and faith-based organizations. Therefore, let us not be proud. As branches of a wild olive tree grafted into a natural good olive tree, we can be cut off if we are proud like the gentile Christian leaders during Paul’s time. Today, those chosen by God, branches of the wild olive tree, are cut off, shamed, and destroyed because of pride. Let us fight against pride with God’s help!
