A CHEERFUL HEART
Bible in a Year: Amos 8, Amos 9; Romans 5:12-21; Proverbs 17:15-24
“A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
Proverbs 17:22 WEB
In 2011, I was a student in my second year of studying in the Bachelor of Theology program at Kawthoolei Karen Baptist Bible School and College (KKBBSC). About halfway through the academic year, I got news that my mother’s health had gotten worse and she could not move properly or eat well. She needed to be hospitalized. My family members were living distant from one another and we were very worried. By God’s grace, I talked to my teachers and received the permission to go and care for my mother in the hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, I could not recognize her. She was skin and bones. The dark circles around her sunken eyes made it difficult to recognize my beautiful mother. The doctor said my mother needed a kidney operation. My mother was afraid and did not want to have a surgery. She asked me to pray for her not to have an operation. She said if God would listen, she would serve God as long as she lived. Because of the prayer of so many people and God’s grace, my mother was healed without the need for operation. In two weeks, she was discharged.
Here is why I am giving a testimony regarding my mother. As far as I could tell, in the past my mother was few in words and weak in socializing. She seldom smiled and did not seem joyful. She was not involved much in the church. Many people said my mother was proud and they were afraid to talk to her. But, after God healed her illness, I saw great changes in my mother. She was happy to be involved in the church ministry and served in women’s fellowship. She began to smile and laugh and look happy all the time. What I witnessed was that my mother gained strength from God’s healing power and love, which made it possible for her to cheerfully serve God as she promised. Now, my mother is not only healthier, but also happier with her life knowing that she is closer to God than ever before. In Christ, we can be cheerful and we can be a channel of blessing to others with a cheerful heart. As the Bible says, “A cheerful heart makes good medicine,” let us wear a cheerful heart that makes us healthy and a blessing to others.
What do I do to have a cheerful heart? How would things be different if I wear a cheerful heart in my daily life? How does having a cheerful heart influence people around me?
Dear Father God, I thank You for healing my mother and giving her a cheerful heart. Please give me a cheerful heart as well to serve You in faithfulness. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
