A LIFE THAT DOES NOT PLEASE GOD
Bible in a Year: 2 Kings 16, 2 Kings 17; Acts 26:24-32, Acts 27:1-12;
Psalm 81:8-16
“But my people didn’t listen to my voice. Israel desired none of me. So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels.”
Psalm 81:11-12 WEB
We read about King Ahaz in 2 Kings 16. Ahaz was 20 years old when he became king and he reigned for 16 years. We learned that Ahaz led a life that did not please God (2 Kings 16:2). Ahaz burned incense in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and sacrificed his children in the fire; because Ahaz did things detestable to the Lord, he was driven out before the Israelites (2 Chronicles 28:3). The title of our devotional today is “A Life that Does Not Please God” and Ahaz exemplified that kind of life. He followed other kings, offered sacrifices to idols, worshipped Baal, and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree. He took treasures from the temple and the royal palace and presented them to the King of Assyria, Tiglath-Pileser, who agreed to support Ahaz by attacking and seizing Damascus. The king of Assyria deported and enslaved the people and also killed Rezin, the king of Aram. At that time, Uriah was the priest. He followed Ahaz’s instructions to build an altar in the pattern of the temple in Damascus. Ahaz moved the altar of burnt offering, the bronze altar, and offered sacrifices to the pagan altar instead. Ahaz did as he pleased. He honored and depended on early kings greater than he did on God. Ahaz committed sacrilege and paved the way for the future fall of Judah. Ahaz died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David, but he did not earn the privilege of being placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel.
Reflection
Is there any place in your life where you rely on men more than God?
Prayer
Dear God, direct my life to please you and depend on you always.
In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
