CITIZEN OF HEAVEN

ID cards are used for proof of identity. A Permanent Residence Card or Green Card is a form of ID that allows an immigrant to live and work permanently in the United States and I received mine shortly after 3 months of living in the US. I became a US citizen in 2018. April 24, 2011 was one of the best days in my life. The three congregations, English, Spanish, and Karen, gathered early in the morning to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus. We were outside, so I could feel the breeze gently caressing my skin as we sang in our native tongue and listened to the Scripture and sermon. Later on that day around 11 AM, I was baptized before God and the congregation. Two thousand years ago, Jesus was baptized to identify with sinners, but that day I identify with Jesus in his righteousness. Absolute joy filled my heart as I came out of the remission of sin and death unto freedom and life. Sheer delight filled my soul as I united with my spiritual family. My cup runneth over as I became a part of a big family of God and a citizen of heaven. Have I always been a good US citizen? No! I have driven over the speed limit, made illegal turns, and committed many other minor illegal acts. In the same way, I have not been a good Christian and child of God. I have not always followed what the Word teaches. I was proud and arrogant. I lived against the guidance laid out in the Bible. Unfortunately, I have made many mistakes in my life. I have betrayed friends, family, and God. Thank God I am not justified by my own work of keeping the law but by the work Jesus did on the cross. Thank God I am set free from every sin the moment I put my faith in Jesus; past, present, and future. Thank God I am a citizen of heaven and a Child of God. Though I have gone astray, His love reaches out to me and patiently guides me so I may walk in the path of righteousness.

Dear God, we thank you for giving us the privilege to become citizens of heaven through your son Jesus Christ. Help us to demonstrate God’s kingdom here on earth. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
