 THE FATHER’S LOVE

Bible In A Year: 2 Samuel 18:19-33; 2 Samuel 19; Acts 7:44-60; Acts 8:1-3; Psalms 73:1-14

“ The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate, and wept. As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died for you, Absalom, my son, my son!”
2 Samuel 18:33 WEB

This Bible verse revealed the magnitude of King David’s love for his son, who rebelled against him and  tried to dethrone him with his insurgent followers. The king’s son became the king’s enemy. In spite of his son’s betrayal, David’s love for his son remained the same. David was worried for Absalom and told his commanders and soldiers to be gentle with him.  While they were fighting, one of David’s men saw Absalom riding a mule into the thick branches of a large oak and his hair got caught in the tree. His mule kept running and Absolom was left hanging in midair. When the man told Joab about that, Joab told him “Why didn’t you strike him down to the ground by your sword? I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a warrior belt.”  The man answered, “Even if you give me silver, I would not harm the king’s son.”  Joab, being the general for his people, was ready to fight for his people.  He took three javelins and plunged them to the heart of Absalom. They dumped his body in a big pit among the trees and covered the pit with a large heap of rocks. Joab sounded the trumpet and his followers came back from pursuing the Israelites. This was the news of victory for David’s army. When the news of Absalom’s death got to the king, the king wept with a broken heart. David grieved, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died for you, Absalom, my son, my son!”

Like David, our Heavenly Father also experienced anguish watching His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, die on the cross. The difference here is that the Father was perfect and Jesus was sinless. The sinless Son had to take the place of the Father’s enemy. While Jesus’ death was heart-breaking for the Father, it brought redemption and joy for us. Such is the highest form of sacrificial love to which we should respond with love and obedience.

Reflection

Will you accept the Father’s love? If you have already accepted the Father’s love, what is a proper response to the Father’s love for you?

Prayer

Dear Father, thank you for your sacrificial love. Please teach me to love You and others with the love You love me. In Jesus’ Name I pray.  Amen.
