TONGUE

Bible In a Year: 1 Samuel 5, 1 Samuel 6, 1 Samuel 7; John 11:45-57,
John 12:1-11; Proverbs 12:18-27

“There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.”
Proverbs 12:18 WEB

God created many body parts along with the tongue so we can communicate. Although God created tongues for animals, they cannot talk like humans. A tongue plays a very powerful role. A tongue may be small, but can do remarkable things. Because of the tongue, people can love you or hate you. Because of the tongue, there can be peace or wars.

I was a student in 1992. One day I felt pain on my tongue out of the blue. It became increasingly painful day after day to the point where I could not eat. In fact, I was afraid to eat. I went to see the doctor; the medicine he prescribed did not help me. I thought, “If this tongue got ruined, a lot of problems will ensue. It will ruin my ability to communicate, eat, swallow, and taste the flavor of bitterness, sourness, sweetness, and spices.” I was very afraid. I did not know what to do. Later, I remembered God and prayed to Him with all my heart. At that time, a friend suggested me to take an indigenous medicine, Koe Ba Say. With faith in God I took the medicine. I felt an intense burning sensation on my tongue. I tolerated the pain because I wanted to get better. By God’s grace, my tongue got healed gradually and then completely. In the past, the whole tongue was white. Once it was healed, it regained its normal color. I praised God. Just as it is important for the tongue to be physically healthy, it is also essential that our tongues give grace, encourage, build up, bless, and bring peace.

Reflection

Proverbs 15:1 reminds us how a tongue can bring joy or sadness. Does your tongue heal? Or does it hurt like the piercing of a sword? Let us be careful with our tongues.

Prayer

Dear Jesus Christ, please rule my tongue so I will not wrong against You or others. We pray in Your Name. Amen.
