PROMISE
Bible in a Year: Zechariah 12, Zechariah 13, Zechariah 14; Revelation 2:1-17; Proverbs 30:1-10
“Don’t be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested; and you will have oppression for ten days. Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
Revelation 2:10 WEB
Once, a young pastor was invited by a village elder, who lived on a farm, a nine-hour walking distance from the village. After planting paddy, the elder wanted to have a thanksgiving service at home and asked the young pastor to lead the service. Early in the morning, the young pastor set out for the journey and left his village. The rain was pouring on the way. There was a river and the heavy rain caused the water to come up to the river bank. The river was flooded with the current rushing fast and strongly. To get to the other side of the river, there were two poles of bamboo laid across the river as a bridge. The young pastor would have to walk across on one bamboo pole and hold onto the other bamboo pole. He paused for a moment and talked to God, “Lord, I have $50. If you would deliver me safely across this river, I would donate all of my $50.” While he was half-way through walking on the wobbly bamboo pole, he said, “God, I was kidding.” Right then his next step missed the bamboo pole, but an old lady also crossing the river pulled his hand, so he did not fall into the water. The young pastor became very afraid and gave all of his $50 to the old lady who saved him. She blessed him and he went onward.
Once the young pastor reached the elder’s home, he led the worship and testified that we ought to keep our promise to God to be more deserving of His blessings. After having a meal, the elder said to him, “Because you were true to your words and came to worship in my home, I will give you $500.”
Reflection
Have you made a promise to God? Have you kept your promise?
Prayer
Father God, teach us, lead us, and care for us with Your Holy Spirit so that we will keep our promises to You and become more deserving of Your grace and blessings.
In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
