TO WHERE SHOULD I LIFT MY EYES?

Bible in a Year:  Ezekiel 20:45-49, Ezekiel 21, Ezekiel 22:1-22; Hebrews 10:19-39; Psalm 123:1-4

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?”
Psalm 123:1 WEB

My name is Naw Eh Wah. I am fourteen years old. I live in Sin-Zwe village in the Bago Yoma Mountain region. My village is located not too far from the city, but, due to poor transportation, travelling is hard. Water scarcity is a major issue in my village. The government established a school in our village, but there were no teachers. We were not taken to school either. We just had to help out on the farms. Many elders think farming is more reliable than learning. My mother died when I was six years old. She left me with my father and my two other siblings. One day a teacher visited my father. He told me, “I will take you home and you will go to school.” My father also said, “It is by God’s grace that you will get to go to school. Work hard!” I wondered how I was supposed to work hard. My cousins and I went to the city. The teacher enrolled us in school and asked us to attend classes. After a year in school, I realized that I would always be behind others if I did not work hard. The first Bible verse the teacher taught me was Psalm 121:1, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?” I did not understand where I was supposed to lift up my eyes. After two years living with the teacher and his wife, my father also died. I am so sad I have no parents. I feel very insecure. But, the teacher and his wife encouraged me in my studies and taught me cooking and some skills. I can now play piano and also know how to type Karen and English on a computer. Actually, I am also helping type devotionals for this book, “Karen Stories for God’s Glory.” I am learning a lot. Most important of all, I get to learn and read the word of God. This gives me assurance in my heart that I need not worry about the future. I am able to think well now. The One Who resides in heaven, I am lifting my eyes to You.

Reflection

Today, to whom are you lifting your eyes? When we know to whom we are to lift our eyes, we receive the strength to go forward.

Prayer

Father, thank You for helping me to understand that You are taking care of me, You know me, and You will not abandon me. In Jesus name I thank You and pray to You. Amen.
