KEY TO SUCCESS
Bible in a Year: Ezekiel 10, Ezekiel 11, Ezekiel 12; Hebrews 7:11-28; Psalm 119:169-176
“I have gone astray like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I don’t forget your commandments.”
Psalm 119:176 WEB
Proverbs 27:5 reads, “Better is open rebuke than hidden love.” This scripture is for us, parents, teachers, and servants of God. Rebuke is necessary in bringing blessings. Although rebukes may not be understood at the beginning, with prayers, they bring understanding and blessings.
When I was young, my father told me, “Don’t lie, don’t curse, don’t fight with others, don’t play truant” along with many other don’ts. My father did not give me money for snacks when I was a student. I watched others eat and it watered my mouth. One day I came home from school during lunch time and saw my father’s jacket hanging. I reached into the pockets and found two quarters. I took one. I thought he would not find out. After the school day was over and I came home, my father whipped me and left marks. My mother rubbed turmeric in those marks while crying. I was crying too. Moments later, my father talked to me. He said, “I am afraid you will become a thief and that’s why I drove out the devil in you.” Thank God the devil left quickly or I felt like I was going to die. Later, my father took me to the noodle shop. He bought me the noodles but he only had hot tea. I understood then. I believe that I am where I am now because of my father’s discipline that came from loving me whole-heartedly. Proverbs 29:1 tells us, “He who is often rebuked and stiffens his neck will be destroyed suddenly, with no remedy.” We, sons and daughters, need to understand the instructions, care, and sacrifices of our parents. We need to obey our parents and not bring shame to them. We will then be blessed. To avoid going astray like a lost sheep, my father taught and disciplined me and I will never forget his instructions.
Reflection
Some disciplines can be strong, but can lead us back to the right path. Have you ever been disciplined like that? Did it straighten your path?
Prayer
Dear God, teach and help us so we will be parents who love our children in the right way. Bless our children to become obedient to their parents and teachers and lead an honorable life. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
