YOUR STATUTES ARE MY DELIGHT

Being born and raised in a Buddhist and “ancestor worship” family, it was a struggle for me to accept Christianity and believe that Jesus was the Son of God. Since I was about ten years old, I followed my mother to the Buddhist temple every first day of the month according to the Chinese calendar, to offer incense, chicken and fruits, and prayed to the Buddhas and ancestors to bless the family. It is important to pray for the safety of the family especially for my father who was the sole breadwinner for a family of ten children. I strictly obeyed my mother and believed the Buddhist teaching that I must do good and be kind, and charitable to people. The fortune teller said in doing so, my father would prosper, and in my next life after death, I would turn into a good beast, a monkey or a dog. If I did not do good and did all evil things, I would turn into a pig or a snake in my next life after death. I was so scared to turn into a pig in my next life and so I lived under the threats of the Buddha teaching for years. I followed the golden rules, obeyed my family and Buddhism until one day I was invited by a school friend to attend her church. I had no idea what church was and who Jesus was. To hear that there was a God (not Buddha) in this world who grants salvation and grace and won’t turn people into a pig or a snake but forgiveness if they did evil things, they were eye-opening and comforting words to me. I knew there was a God in this world, but I did not know Buddha was not God nor my great, great, great grandfather and his ancestor was not God. After a couple years of joining the youth group and church, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I was happy that I would not turn into a beast in my next life but joined other saints in paradise. I studied the word of God and learned to live out my Christian faith by following the commands of God. Today, I am a servant-leader for Christians and non-Christians alike. When I met our Burma diaspora brothers and sisters, I understood their religious pressure imposed by their native government making Buddhism into the national religion and they had to comply, or else they would be persecuted. They did suffer from persecution and torture, living a refugee life for years before they were resettled into the U.S. and other countries. Their faith and genuine conviction following the living God was a great sacrifice. By learning and following the commands of God each day, they have become stronger and more resilient people.
