THE TRUTH

Not too long ago, I was in Vietnam visiting one of our Baptist partners in Ho Chi Minh city. We were sitting and talking about challenges of ministry in Vietnam when the partner said that one of the biggest issues they were facing was that false doctrines are spreading among the Christian communities. Later that same trip, I was in Chiang Rai, Thailand speaking with a woman leader, who said that one of the things she was facing was helping the woman to whom she ministered understand the truth of the gospel and not false teachings which were quite prevalent. Then late last year, I was Invited to attend the International Myanmar Baptist Fellowship meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where I heard the whole focus of the meeting was on false teachings and ways to deal with them.

In this entire section of Timothy from verses 14-26, we see Timothy struggling to remind the teacher in the church of what he had been taught by Paul. He was instructed to teach the word of God as it is intended. Paul was wise in that he knew that those who teach a “new” understanding of the word of God must teach about salvation, sin, and forgiveness. This was true as the church was just beginning back then.  Also, it truly is as accurate now as our churches in Asia and around the world are dealing with it.

How do we deal with false doctrine or false teaching? Paul says that one, it is important not to argue as it is not helpful; there is no benefit in arguing. He also says that secondly, it is important to teach the Word just as he instructed Timothy to do. I believe it is important to directly address the false teachings which are around. Strong discipleship training is also crucial. But mainly we do this by teaching core doctrines and scripture that are central to our Christian faith. If we help and teach our people to ‘’rightly handle the word of truth’’, in ways they can understand and adopt as their own, we can prayerfully see them be strong and stay straight even when they are buffeted by false teaching.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your word, the Bible. May we always strive to teach Your word as You intended. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
