GOD’S AFFIRMATION OF HOPE

The prophet Jeremiah was active in the time towards the fall of Judah. Jeremiah 32 is set in the time when Jerusalem was being surrounded by the Chaldeans (Babylonians), and soon to fall into the enemy’s hand in 587 B.C. Jeremiah was a true spokesman of the Lord with messages for both the people and the leaders of Judah (chiefly King Zedekiah). Jeremiah 32 describes a highly critical situation: Jerusalem was being besieged by the Babylonians army, and Jeremiah also was imprisoned. In the midst of all this, the Lord commanded him to redeem or buy a field at Anathoth sold by his cousin (32:6-8). Jeremiah bought the field and stored the deeds in a safe place (32:9-15). Jeremiah, while acknowledging the great deeds of the Lord, still had difficulty in understanding why the Lord had commanded him to make the purchase in the midst of a national crisis (32:16-25). The Lord’s response gave the reason why He commanded Jeremiah to buy the land: “I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is anything too hard for me? (32:27). In this affirmation, God’s universal Lordship and absolute sovereign power are declared. In the following verses are reasons affirming the wisdom of buying the field:
- It is acknowledged that the time was really right (32:28-35) because the city was about to fall into the enemy’s hand.
- Then, a hopeful future is affirmed when the people of Judah and Israel will be restored to their homeland and an everlasting covenant with the Lord be established (32:36-41).
- Finally, Jeremiah’s purchase of the land was a symbol of confident hope in the future, when trade and transactions will be conducted normally in all the land, and there will be prosperity (32:42-44)
Often in times of trouble or grief it is difficult to understand why the Lord allows so much suffering in our life. The Lord has a reason, and if we have faith and trust in Him, in due time He will reveal His wisdom to us. Remember He is the Lord and the God of all flesh; there is nothing that He cannot do.
Reflection
Does it often feel like the frailty of the flesh is just too unbearable for you?
We live in a time of dread and fear, and the enemy is COVID-19, which we cannot see with naked eyes. But remember, God is the God of flesh, which means weak and frail humanity. He will sustain us through these dark times.
Prayer
Our Father, in these dark and difficult days, be our strength and guide. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
