HUMANS ARE ONLY HUMAN

Bible in a Year: Isaiah 30:19-33, Isaiah 31, Isaiah 32; 2 Corinthians 13; Proverbs 22:17-27

“The Egyptians are man, and not God, and their horses are flesh, not spirit.”  
Isaiah 31:3 ESV

God sent a message to His people through the prophet Isaiah not to depend on the Egyptians when they felt threatened by the enemy. God said it plainly that the Egyptians were only mortal human beings. They were only flesh full of weaknesses. The prophet said that those who bypassed God and relied on man would only end up in a disaster. In hardship that we go through, we are to rely on God first and foremost. 

 When I was serving on a mission field in Arakan state, there were only a handful of Christians. In the village where I lived, they had a tradition of making annual offerings to the evil spirits with the blood of animals. They asked us for donations to contribute to the cost of offerings. Because we could not go along with them, we got interrogated by the police, soldiers, and even the township government. That was a fearful time. I informed my leaders, but they could not help me. There was no human who could help me. I did not have any theology to help me either. I only trusted God and surrendered myself to Him. When they were making offerings, the authority issued the rule for Christians to stay outside of the village. They even had a plot to poison and kill us. But, God delivered us through a pouring rain on that hot summer day, March 27. We did not blame any leaders. We were happy. We were grateful. I grew in faith. When we faced troubles and did not get help from man, let’s not blame them. Humans are only human like you and me. God is faithful in His promises. Matthew 28:20 says, “…And behold, I am with you always, to the end of age.”

Reflection

Although we may be lacking in education, talents, and money, when we come to God as we are, we see God working for us and those whom we love.

Prayer

God, give us the heart to discern who You are to us so we will rely more on You.  In Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.
