GOD DELIVERED US FROM DISTRESS

Bible in a Year: Isaiah 36, Isaiah 37; Galatians 2:1-10; Psalm 107:23-32

“Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.”  
Psalm 107:28-29 ESV

It was in 2009 on May 3rd, when six young employees and four villagers went to Bogalay township to receive the cash to distribute to children’s families as planned by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). After completing financial documentation, the young workers each carried five lakhs or 10 lakhs respectively. The sunset gradually ushered in the darkness and it was almost 7 PM. The team of 10 got in a boat powered by the outboard motor. The two villagers and a young employee sat on the front of the boat. Twenty minutes after getting underway, a big ship going at a fast speed suddenly appeared and a collision ensued in the darkness. The boat capsized and went under. By God’s grace, the operator of the boat quickly dropped the outboard motor, which allowed the boat to come back up and stay afloat. Most of them could not swim and the ones who could swim were tossed away. Three young women and one young man sank right where the boat went down. They cried out to the Lord and said a prayer of total surrender into the hands of God. At that moment, the young man, who could not swim but had long legs and arms, resurfaced and was able to get hold of the floating capsized boat. He looked around and saw a young woman also resurface. He quickly grabbed her hair and pulled her to the buoyant boat and asked her to hold onto it. He pulled others in this same manner and saved lives. Eventually, they counted the numbers who survived and found that no one perished. They praised God for delivering them from death. A strange thing was that they only lost one bag of cash that had five lakhs. 

The Psalmist said God delivered them from stress when they cried out to the Lord in total surrender. God’s provision over the situations we face is the work of His grace for which we can never thank Him enough.

God, Your greatness and Your grace carry us through situations in which no man could help us. Guide us with Your deep love to praise You unceasingly. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
