BECAUSE OF MY MOTHER’S WORDS

I asked my mother, “Where is Daddy?” She answered in tears, “Son, the tyrannous soldiers took him as a porter. If you do not want to be put into forced labor imposed upon us by the tyrants, you will need to study hard and become educated. Because your Mommy and Daddy are poor and uneducated, we cannot send you to school. Now, Mommy will have to send you to a place where you can study.” As a child, I did not fully understand what my mother said, but I promised her I would become educated because of my love for my parents. One day, my mother packed food, prepared a green Karen bag in which she put a few clothes for me, and took me to a pastor’s home. Father Rev. Aye Lwin, a pastor in Ter Koh village, and his loving wife helped villagers and church members the best they could during the time the tyrants committed brutality against us. In summer 1990, the pastor and his wife took me to Thaw Leh Tah village to be taken care of by another family. My mother shed tears as she watched me get on a bus on the road near Nah Peh village. I thank God for giving me new parents who loved me, cared for me, and encouraged me to pursue education. In December 1995, there were divisions in the Karen revolutionary control, which adversely affected my caretakers, and they could no longer afford to send me to school. Father Thein Aung told me, “If you want to study further, you will need to live in an orphanage. We can’t afford to send you to school anymore.” With eagerness to study, I went to live in an orphanage and studied progressively. At times, my heart got disheartened and exhausted because of poverty, starvation, and threats to us. Although I had parents, I did not know where they were or what they were doing. I missed them so much and my heart yearned to see them, but there was nothing I could do. I had to grow up with others in different places to pursue education. With hope and faith in God, I accepted the pain and studied hard because I always heard my mother’s words in my ears. I thank God for His provisions step by step. God put teachers and pastors, such as Grandpa Tharah Diamond, Rev. Dr. Wati, Rev. Dr. Hsa Mu Taw, and others, in my life so I could learn from them. God mysteriously blessed and provided for me in His own time, which afforded me to earn a Master of Divinity (M.Div) and Doctor of Ministry (D.Min). I am serving in the ministry today because of God’s grace. I want to testify that good instructions from parents and guidance from teachers brought grace, blessings, honor, and wisdom in my life.

Dear God, according to your mercy, please give my people opportunities to learn so they will have the wisdom to lead our nation, people, and Your ministries. For our people, the oppression is perpetuated by a lack of education. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
