THE HOLY FAITH OF OUR FATHERS

I still remember what happened in my village. We got the news. The enemy would enter our region. They planned to destroy our places, livelihood, and ways of communication. Their ultimate plot was to annihilate our Karen people in the revolutionary area. Our grandparents, parents, village leaders, pastors, church members, and villagers held a meeting. Our defense strategy was determined — “The danger we are facing is frightening. Tomorrow is Sunday. From 6 AM in the morning to 6 PM in the evening, all of us, including children, will fast and pray.” Everyone was united in following this plan. The next morning before 6 AM, the church bell rang. I saw people walking to church, mostly fathers and some mothers. In quietness, we prayed and read the scriptures. Time was assigned for each person to enter into a prayer room and pray to the Lord. I saw one person after another entering into the prayer room imploring on our behalf all day long. There was this air of somberness and reverence surrounding the church. In a way, it even felt majestic. After 6 PM, everyone went home. Three days after, we got the news that the plan of the enemy to destroy us was ruined. The villages were overjoyed and went back to their way of life peacefully. What I wanted to say was that our grandparents and parents in the previous generations were united in love, one mind, and one faith. When they faced adversity, the first place they ran to was God. They fasted, prayed, and confessed their sins.

Reflection

In good or bad times, how will we strive to keep our Karen’s customs of singing and praising God for the good work He has done in our lives?

God, please help us to sing praises to You for Your good work and live to glorify You.
