BROKEN-HEARTED FOR A PURPOSE
Bible in a year – Nehemiah 1, Nehemiah 2, Revelation 16, Psalm 147:1-11
“He gathers the outcasts…He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds…the Lord supports the afflicted; He brings down the wicked to the ground.”
Psalm 147:2b, 3, 6 NASB
We are all made in the image of God yet it may be our broken heart that God uses to draw us into that special relationship with Him that saves us for all eternity! It is in our deepest pain that our attentions change from our busy, daily lives to even think of God. All of life stops in our time of wounding and we may for the first time cry out to God. “Help me!” Life for me as a young man was all about fast cars, fun times and making money! Of course it involved drinking “just to be social.” Yet one night when I was working late I heard the door open. Before I knew it, I found myself at gunpoint! My heart was pumping fast but time seemed to also stand still. At that moment, I told myself “I’m not ready to die!” I had always had a fear of dying and wondered where I would go and what it would be like. Now forced to my knees and being cuffed by a stranger is when I talked to God. As I heard the gun made ready to fire, my plea was for God to save me and I would surely give my life to Him. The stranger left in that instant. This began my journey of hope!
I met my wife at a church single’s group. She was a testimony of this same hope and healing from a broken heart. She, as a young girl, had believed the promise of being loved by a man she took as her husband only to be beaten and abused on the night of her wedding. Over the next seven years she had her jaw broken from punches and her trachea collapsed from being choked. One evening, this military man became very dark and said “I’m going to kill you then kill myself.” In a moment, with a strong arm and hammer aimed at her head, she cried out to God for help! This man crumbled to the ground as she heard the Holy Spirit say “run, run!” He became her wonderful counselor, great physician and mighty God that delivered her from such wickedness and gave her comfort for her wounds of body and soul. Now for more than 20 years, we have been married and adopted two amazing children from their own loss, pain and grief. Together our family has sought to bring hope into the dark places of suffering. His purposes were worked in us and for others by our broken hearts!
Reflection
What brokenness can you bring to the Lord for healing? What comfort for others?
Prayer
Lord, rescue me and save me from this fear and pain. Give me your comfort. Show me those who need this comfort that you give to share hope. In Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.
