LIVING IN THE FEAR OF GOD

“For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you don’t consume one another.”

I want to share one of many experiences I have had in my life. When one of my siblings was getting married, we took a ride in two vehicles to attend the wedding. The car that I was in was followed by the other car. On the way, the car behind ours broke down.  When I received a phone message that it would take longer to fix that car, I told the driver of our car to get some food while waiting. One of the women in our car misunderstood the situation and started to swear at me. She was so angry at me that she kept on swearing and bothering me in different ways until the next day. I became so upset that I wanted to react in the same manner to her. I had to try hard to control my anger. So, I went to my room and picked up the Bible to read Proverbs 23:17 – “Don’t let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear Yahweh all day long.” If we are in fear of God all day long, it is a blessing for us.  After reading it, I regained comfort and refuge in the Lord, and became joyful by the touch of the Holy Spirit for teaching me the truth and telling me not to retaliate. The fear of God stops the desire for retribution. The fear of God gives strength to forgive others for their weaknesses and to be pleased with doing so.  The fear of God gives wisdom and freedom from other fears. May the fear of God and the love of others stay within all of us and deliver us from the destruction of each other.
