GENEROUS OFFERING

“But now complete the doing also, that as there was the readiness to be willing, so there may be the completion als0 out of your ability. For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what you have, not according to what you don’t have.”

In 1970-1980, we still used coins, 5 pyas, 10 pyas, 25 pyas, and 50 pyas. For each offering we put in 5 pyas. We usually started every Sunday with attending the morning service at 7 A.M. and ended with joining the evening youth service at 6 P.M. Worshipping in five services on Sunday was the norm. At that time, one viss (3.6 pounds) of pork cost 20 kyats. Those were poverty-stricken years. People were poor and our youth fund was very poor as well. Each youth member could contribute only 25 pyas a month. The leaders of the youth made a plan to raise some funds by encouraging members to give at least one kyat per month. I was a college student. It was very hard for me to pay even 20 pyas for bus fare each day.  I told God I wanted to contribute generously as a church member.  I wanted to give 20 kyats per month. And God gave me exactly 20 kyats. I helped an uncle sell 10 visses of pork per month. He gave me one viss of pork, which I sold and got 20 kyats. God was true to me and I was true to Him. 

Philippian and Thessalonian churches were in Macedonia. Paul said that although they were facing trials, the Macedonians gave generously to their needy brothers and sisters in Jerusalem (2 Corinthians 8:2).  Paul exhorted the Corinthians to follow through with their pledges to the saints in Jerusalem and fulfill their promises.
