GOD IS MY STRONG REFUGE
Bible In A Year: 2 Samuel 11, 2 Samuel 12; Acts 4:1-22; Psalm 71:1-8

Acts chapter 4 tells us about Peter preaching on the resurrection of the dead through Jesus. Many came to Christ and the number of men who believed were counted to be 5,000 (Acts 4:4). The increasing number of believers threatened and upset the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, so they laid hands on the disciples and put them in custody. The priests loved their power. The Pharisees and the scribes placed utmost importance on the law and traditions. The Sadducees, profiting from the business in the temple, did not believe in the resurrection. They marvelled at the message of the Gospel but their minds were set on positions, power, possessions, and self-righteousness, which hardened their hearts and blinded their eyes to receive the truth. Deliverance and redemption knocked on their doors, but they not only rejected the Good News, but put those bringing the Good News into confinement. They were free in the flesh, but they were in bondage in spirit. They believed what is temporary to be their strong refuge.
On the other hand, the disciples told the truth and God helped them. The Jewish leaders saw Peter and John as uneducated, ignorant, and untrained. They threatened them. They also marvelled at how these ordinary people could speak with such conviction. John and Peter, although in bodily confinement, were filled with the Holy Spirit, through which they spoke of the word of God with boldness and freedom. What is eternal, which is God, was their strong refuge. We as God’s servants will surely go through trials, but if we unwaveringly remain in the truth, we do not need to be afraid. God is with us and He is our strong refuge. Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
