LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR
AS YOURSELF

Bible in A Year: Deuteronomy 2:24-37, Deuteronomy 3, Deuteronomy 4:1-4; Luke 10:25-42, Luke 11:1-4; Psalms 41:7-13

“He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.””
Luke 10:27 WEB

You probably cannot count how many times you have heard this Bible verse, “Love your neighbor as yourself” and still are wondering why you should love others.  Well, how about taking time to talk to God and ask Him to help you? Only God can help because God is love. We know that loving our family members is easier than loving our neighbors. For some people, even loving their own family is hard.

Remember the story of a traveller who got attacked by robbers on his way from Jerusalem to Jericho! He was beaten and probably half-dead. A priest and a Levite passed by, but they did not help him. A Samaritan, who supposedly was his enemy, was the one who helped him.

We struggle with one thing or another in our lives. I once was like a priest and a Levite. I could not love others as I love myself. I had an issue when it came to trusting people, which made it hard for me to love people. I grew up not having the care of a parent, as my dad passed away when I was young and my mother remarried. I was often called an orphan, which sounded very painful to me. I hated those who called me an orphan. I was immature and I just could not help but feel that way. Culturally, if you were not raised by your parents, people would look down on you. Those who did not grow up with their parents could definitely relate to me. I always felt like people disliked me and gossiped about  me.

By the grace of God, I have changed today. I no longer hate people, but appreciate them. My life experiences shaped me to be the strong woman I am today. I could not have done it without God, the man I love, and the support of my family, friends, and leaders at my church.

Reflection

From a rating of 1 to 10, with 1 being the least and 10 the most, how would you rank your love for your neighbors? Don’t worry! God can help you.

Prayer

God, I thank you for forgiving me and changing me. Please help our brothers and sisters, who struggle to love others. Please help us to be like the kind and loving Samaritan.  In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
