GOD HATES IDOLATRY

Bible in A Year: Deuteronomy 16:21-22, Deuteronomy 17, Deuteronomy 18; Luke 14:15-35; Psalm 44:13-26

“You shall not plant for yourselves an Asherah of any kind of tree beside Yahweh your God’s altar, which you shall make for yourselves. Neither shall you set yourself up a sacred stone which Yahweh your God hates.”
Deuteronomy 16:21-22 WEB

Once, my friend and I went on a short mission trip to a village in the mountains. We told the villagers, “Tomorrow, we will go and worship with a family that accepted  Christ, but later went back to the traditional animism in hopes of being healed from an illness.  They followed occult practices prescribed for healing and spent so much money that they had almost no money left. However, the illness did not go away, but got worse. False gods give us false hope and that is why God hates idolatry.

In the evening, we had a fun program in the village and saw many villagers having fun. The next day was Sunday. When we were in church waiting for the worship to begin, the lady, whom we planned to visit later that day, came to me and asked, “Do you have medicine?” I replied, “I do not.” I looked at her and she was swollen all over her body and her swelling tongue was sticking out. My heart just ached for her with so much compassion. I told her I would pray for her. Afterwards, we joined the worship service.

In the evening, we visited her and she accepted us. She sat and folded her hands reverently. I prayed to God and asked Him to tie up the devil’s hands so it would not bother this lady or that this lady would not listen to the devil. I asked my friend to sing a song with the lyrics, “In Jesus’ Name, we have victory…the devil will flee…when we fight in Jesus’ Name…it can’t harm us…we are victors.” I asked her, “Do you believe in Jesus Christ to heal you?” She answered, “Yes, I do.”  There was not much we could do on our own; but we could always give the gift of Christ for He alone can heal us and free us from the heavy burdens false gods put on us.

Reflection

In life when we face the darkness of the storms and illnesses, let us be steadfast in our faith and keep away from things God hates for God knows what is best for us.

Prayer

God, please help me to keep away from things God hates. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
