THE JOURNEY TO BECOMING
A CHRISTIAN
Bible in A Year: Numbers 35, Numbers 36:1-12; Luke 9:28-56; Psalm 40:9-17
“ Let such as love your salvation say continually, “Let Yahweh be exalted!””
Psalm 40:16b WEB
Before becoming a Christian, I grew up in a household where my parents practiced animism/ancestral worship and the rituals that ensued. Our family made offerings to the mountain gods for prosperity and health. This was just one of the many rituals we practiced! Before deciding on anything or even making any plans, we ascertained if we should go ahead with it only after making careful calculations. We then went ahead with the plan only if the calculations confirmed an auspicious outcome. Every year, without fail, my parents would gather my siblings and me to make offerings to spirits. Thereafter, our family would feast on the food offerings we had earlier made to the spirits. We also had a wrist tying ceremony and this practice is believed to call upon our guardian spirit. Subsequently when I became a Christian, I knew for a fact that these practices were contradictory to Christian teachings.
Back in the days when we used to live in a village, we did not allow pastors to step foot into our house when we were eating. We also did not allow anyone to bring the Bible into our house. A few years later, war and strife arrived at our village and we had to flee from our home to take refuge at a refugee camp. While we were on the run, my parents ended all their old animistic practices and instead turned to Buddhism, the religion they practice today. When I was young and before we entered the refugee camp, my parents had ambitions for me to enter monkhood so they sent me away to live at a monastery. But this plan was shelved when we arrived at the refugee camp and I was given the opportunity to attend school. The school was opened by Christians and it was here that I first heard the Word of God from my teachers. “So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). From then on, I no longer aspired to become a monk. My thirst for the knowledge of the living God grew and I sought to find out more about His salvation of mankind and His good works. In 2004, the Holy Spirit worked within me and I had a strong desire to become a true believer. I was convinced beyond a doubt that there is nothing in this world that would bring me salvation and eternal life other than Jesus Christ Himself. After I committed myself to become a true believer, I had to persuade my parents. It was only after three to four attempts of persuasion that they relented and I finally became a Christian. I am now a new person as described by Paul in his encouragement to the Corinthians, “… anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.”
As believers we must become a light for God. We must not only grow physically. We must also grow spiritually. That I believe, is our duty as a believer of the living God.
Reflection
As the LORD has saved you, do you hold Him in reverence? Do you praise Him with everything that is within you?
Prayer
LORD, help me to love You more. Help my family members to accept you as Christ as well. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
