LOVE RIGHTEOUSNESS
Bible in A Year: Genesis 31:1-55, Matthew 12:1-21, Psalm 9:13-20
“Your father has deceived me, and changed my wages ten times, but God didn’t allow him to hurt me.”

If we read Genesis 31 entirely, we will learn about what Jacob had to go through and how he was cheated by his father-in-law, Laban. How is that so? If we studied Jacob’s life, he himself cheated Esau out of the blessings for the eldest son (Genesis 25:29-34). Moreover, Jacob deceived his father to bless him (Genesis 27). Just as he cheated, he was also cheated. However, Jacob made efforts consistently to honor God and God blessed Him.
When I lived in Insein, I taught at the seminary. One day, my cousin, some students, and I went to the market to buy some blouses. At a store, my cousin saw a blouse that she really liked. However, she did not have enough money. So, we told the store owner to put aside the blouse, and that she would run back to the dorm to get more money and return. To our surprise, the store owner replied, “Go ahead and take the blouse. You can come back and pay for the rest at a later convenient time for you.” We asked in disbelief, “You don’t know us. Aren’t you afraid we would cheat on you?” She replied, “I know you are Karen from the seminary on the hill. I know you would not cheat on me.” This pleased us and reminded us to always do the right thing. We immediately went back to the campus, got the money, and paid her in full. Since then, we started having a good relationship. Every time we bought from that store, the owner gave us a discount.
We Karen are known for revering God, having a good heart, practicing humility, and being hospitable. The lyrics of our Karen national anthem, “Oh my people..,” reveals our people’s character and nature that we need to take pride in and uphold. Those who honor God and follow His will may face adversity and afflictions, but God will surely deliver and bless them. Let us live out our people’s honor in the best way possible for the greatest glory of God.
Reflection
When we sing our national anthem, let us thoroughly ponder, “Do I live a righteous life according to God’s will, or do I live a life of lies that causes harm to others?”
Prayer
God, please help us to lead a righteous life before you and to be a good example and blessing for others. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
