ENCOURAGE YOURSELF

Bible in A Year: Job 19, Job 20, Job 21; Matthew 21:1-17; Psalm 18:1-6

“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives. In the end, he will stand upon the earth.”
Job 19:25 WEB

When we are sick and tired, we need friends to visit us and encourage us. In Job 19, we read that Job was sick and tired; he lamented about his sufferings.  Neither his wife’s remark nor his friends’ utterances brought relief. Instead, they brought more despair to Job. And yet, Job 19:25-27 said these incredible words, “I know that my redeemer lives.” Job’s own words brought encouragement, comfort, and contentment to himself in his painful ordeal.

October 5, 1980, was the day I got baptized. Right after the baptism, I came home and noticed lumps on my hands and feet. What happened? People looked at me and they had no idea what those lumps were. Two or three days later, my entire body began to swell spreading to my face, the entirety of my back — lumps from head to toe. Lying down produced burning back pain. During that week, a conference was held in our village. Leaders and teachers came. I, on the other hand, had to hide in my room. I could only listen to the fun celebration going on in the village. Then, I heard two young teachers singing a duet, “Dear God, I will serve you till I die. I promise this as your child…Chorus, Dear God, always be near me, there are no worries with you near me.” The song and the lyrics comforted me and lifted my heart and my mind. I quietly prayed to God in the words of the song and believed God would perform a miracle for my illness.  In two weeks, I was healed. People thought I would have scars on my face and my body like pitted scars from smallpox. By the grace of God, everything worked out for me at the end.

Reflection

Just as “I know my redeemer lives” is the declaration Job spoke to encourage himself when he suffered misery, we also need our own words to encourage ourselves in knowing and trusting God. Today, how will you encourage yourself?

Prayer

Lord, please live in me in my walk of life on earth until I live with you in eternity.  In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
