SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Naturally, some people would like to take advantage of being the head of a community or organization. They want to be prominent leaders to command or lead followers to be successful in their lives as a whole. But, many never achieve their goals because they lack important characteristics of good leadership. In Matthew 20:27, Jesus taught His disciples about godly leadership that one must first humble oneself as a good leader. This person must obey authority, take responsibility for his or her work, and always do his or her best to be a good and faithful servant or follower as well. Thus, he or she will finally gain the trust, love and respect of the community and be able to lead them successfully.
About 15 years ago, when the church founding pastor of a city church passed away, the church elders had a hard time getting a new pastor. After struggling for three strenuous years, they finally got a pastor who was a retired, elderly, field-evangelist with a large family. In his first few years in the ministry as a humble, patient, simple, and hardworking pastor, he faithfully served the congregation. He later gained the trust, love and support of the church, which finally thrives as a witnessing family of God in the heart of the city.
Reflection
To be a successful leader in the service of the Lord, we must follow the footsteps of Jesus’ leadership. Are there areas in your church that need servant leadership? Is there a need for you to help?
Prayer
God, please help us to understand that in serving and glorifying Thee, we will first have to learn to humble ourselves as a faithful servant. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
