IN MY FATHER’S BAMBOO MAT

Bible in A Year: Job 11, Job 12, Job 13, Job 14; Matthew 20:1-19;
Psalm 17:6-12

“Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings, from the wicked who oppress me, my deadly enemies, who surround me.”
Psalm 17:8-9  WEB

Bratatat…Bang! Bang! Bang!  The sounds of guns firing filled the air. Villagers ran out of the village. As a small child, I was trembling with fears. I felt utterly helpless. My sister, Juna, threw my younger brother on her back and put the two cups of rice in a bag that we were planning to cook for supper. In a rush, she scrambled to avoid being seen by the tyrannous soldiers. She frantically handed me the rice and a rolled-up bamboo mat that my father weaved and we slept on at night. She said, “Hide in the roll of that bamboo mat!” With the baby on her back, she ran to hide somewhere. It was a rainy day in 1989.  My parents were not home; they went to the farms to remove the weeds. In a few minutes, the tyrannous soldiers destroyed the door and ravaged the entire house. They searched for whatever they could take, only a few inches away from the mat roll in which I was hiding. As a child, I was shaking with terrors, but dared not make a sound. I remembered my mother’s teaching, God is our help. As a little boy, all I could silently mutter in my mind was, “God, help me…God, help me.” After taking what they could, they left to return to their post. They did not see me because of God’s grace. I could hide as much as I wanted in my father’s bamboo mat, but had it not been for the shadow of God’s wings that kept me hidden from the wicked, the tyrranous soldiers would have caught and killed me. When reflecting on that experience, I learned that my mother’s instruction for her children to know and believe in God is the ultimate source of help every time we face trouble. I thank God for His loving care for I am alive and I get to praise Him since then until now.

Reflection

In what ways can we help small children to know God is their help in the midst of trouble?

Prayer

Dear God, there are so many children on earth who do not know God is their help. When they face trouble and fear, they need to know You are their help. May your Holy Spirit open the way for them to know help is found in You.  In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
