ANGER OBSTRUCTS BLESSINGS

Bible in A Year: Deuteronomy 31:30, Deuteronomy 32; Luke 19:45-48,
Luke 20:1-26; Psalm 48:9-14

“For you shall see the land from a distance; but you shall not go there into the land which I give the children of Israel.”
Deuteronomy 32:52 WEB

As humans, we have worldly characteristics and one of them is anger.  Mistakes can quickly follow anger. Because of anger, we become blind to the good sides of others; we blame others; we disparage others; we hold grudges; and we dispute. The result is division.

One time, my friend teased me with another man and I did not like it. I told him to stop teasing me. But he would not stop. Instead, he stepped up his teasing. So, I had a laundry brush in my hand and I threw it at him. It landed on his head, which started to bleed profusely. I was mad and I hurt him, but I did not feel bad. I did not feel like I did anything wrong. When I calmed down, I felt so bad that I still cannot forget about it today.

We read in the Bible that Moses was a very patient man. But, Moses’ anger at one point deterred his admission to the promised land. We read in Numbers 20:7-8 that God asked Moses and Aaron to gather the assembly and speak to the rock and it would pour out water for the people and the livestocks. In verse 10, we read that after Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly, Moses said, “Hear now, you rebels! Shall we bring water out of this rock for you?” His words definitely sounded very angry. Verse 11 described that Moses raised his arms and struck the rock twice. Then, we read in Deuteronomy 32:51-52 that Moses and Aaron were allowed to see the land only from a distance and denied entry into the promised land. That particular reaction of anger from Moses was sadly consequential “for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:20).

Reflection

What makes you angry mostly? When we let anger take over, we not only wrong others, but also obstruct blessings. Ephesians 4:26 reminds us, “Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath.”

Prayer

Dear God, please give me patience and humility. Help me not to sin in anger and obstruct blessings. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
