A LESSON FROM A LITTLE CHICK
Bible in A Year: Leviticus 26:14-46, Leviticus 27; Luke 1:1-25; Proverbs 7:1-5
“Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.”
Proverbs 7:2 WEB
As the evening settles down, the rain begins to pour. I go under my hut and gather the hens and put them in the coop one by one. There is one chick that just will not let me handle it. It runs all over the place when the rest of the chicks shelter under the mother hen’s wings. I try and try, but the chick just runs everywhere and I cannot catch it. My dog is watching me intently while I chase after the chick. Then, he makes a move and bites the chick. He comes back to me and lets the chick fall out of his mouth before me. He then returns to the place where he was. I really can’t get mad at my dog. He probably is trying to help me catch the little chick. Leviticus 26:14-46 talks about dire consequences for failing to obey God’s commands. Just like the little chick that does not let its mother protect it and ends up getting bitten to death by the dog, if we do not remember or allow God’s commands to protect us we will stray away, giving the enemy an opportunity to swallow us to destruction. Proverbs 7:2 reads, “Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.” We already read in Psalm 17:8-9, “Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings, from the wicked who oppress me, my deadly enemies, who surround me.”
Reflection
Are you living outside of God’s guidance? Are you living outside of the church Christ paid for with His blood? Learn from the little chick. Other chicks may disappoint you, but under the wings of the mother hen is the safest place for you.
Prayer
Father God, rule my life, lest I ramble wherever my mind sends me. Keep me protected under your wings. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
