FOLLOW ME

“As he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he arose and followed him.”

After teaching the crowd beside the lake, Jesus walked and saw Levi, known as Matthew. Levi was sitting in the tax collector’s booth. Jesus asked him, “Follow me,” and Levi got up and followed Him immediately. If Levi was not the head of the tax collectors, but a regular worker who worked honestly, he would have had to deposit taxes he collected with good record-keeping. He would have been paid as a regular worker. However, at that time, tax collectors were notorious for being greedy, forcing payments, and collaborating with the Roman authority. If that was so with Levi, he would have made a lot of money. However, his conscience would have haunted him. When Jesus called him, Levi did not procrastinate, but followed Jesus instantly. It could have been that he was tired of his work. I think Levi may not have known Jesus that well. Yet, he did not contend with Jesus who called him. Maybe Levi wanted to escape from the work he no longer felt good about doing.
Just like Levi, God made things beautiful for me in His own time. I was a mountain-dweller. My experience was mainly farming and working in the fields. There was no opportunity for me to learn great things. I had little education. I never thought or dreamed of great learning opportunities. In March 1987, I was asked, “Do you want to go to the Bible school?” Just like Matthew, I did not ask any questions. I immediately said “YES!” I was so happy that it was hard to express that experience in words. I can boldly say, God promoted me from insignificant farming capacity to prominent kingdom ministry.
Reflection
Opportunities are blessings for those who desire them and do not procrastinate. Have you ever procrastinated to do the work God wanted you to do?
